If you'd asked Ethan what was going on, the man couldn't even begin to fathom any logical ideas. All he knew, was that this city wasn't safe and he needed to get his ass outta there. Ethan packed a bag, got Ella and Duke (couldn't leave the dog behind) and got in the car. It was difficult getting anywhere what with all the roads being blocked by abandoned vehicles. He didn't get to see the devastation at it's full until they got near the high-street and that's when the shit really hit the fan.
When he realised how bad things were, any controlled movement flew out of the window. No, he couldn't allow Ella to be in this situation and for that he put his foot down on the gas and ploughed into any vehicles that got in his way. This wasn't about being calm, relying on others to aid his way out of here. If he wanted to survive he had to count on himself. No one else was going to keep him safe and no one else would keep Ella from harm, that was his job.
It had been several days since the first load of crap hit and after that point, things just got worse. They rarely stopped off, only stopping to get gas and any supplies needed. They travelled light and thankfully, their vehicle was still in tact. Ethan had made a concious effort to call Ruth, his friend but also a woman whom he cared greatly for. So far, he had no reply and could only hope that she had survived this and managed to get out of the city during the evacuations.
His phone battery had been charged daily, using the cars resources to power up the cell in case Ruth happened to call back. So far, nothing, but he still had high hopes. They'd taken a back road now, nightfall had approached quickly. The roads were pretty empty, he assumed that all the infected were probably lurking around the more typically populated areas, stores and hospitals, that kind of thing where people would be seeking refuge. He remained on the road, nearing closer to the last place where Ruth had been to his knowledge.
It was crazy right? going across the city to look for her but he couldn't leave here without her. He needed to know that she was safe or at least if she'd already gotten out and with most of the roads blocked, this was not only the fastest route but the clearest.
Ella slept soundly in the back seat, Duke laying beside her with his head between his paws. Every slight sound the dog perked up, causing Ethan to glance in the mirror at him "I know buddy. We'll be outta here soon." He assured, the dog being the only company he had right now. Ella was only six years old, but a smart girl, smart enough to know that she shouldn't ever leave his side and would always do what he instructed. This was no place for a child, but their was no alternative.
They had to keep trying, they had to keep fighting and he needed to get them out of here.
Ethan continued to drive along, glancing into the back of the car as he heard Ella stir. Narrowing his eyes ahead of him, he found himself slamming his foot on the brakes as someone or..something came darting out in front of him. The harshness of the car halting, sent Duke crashing to the ground and Ella fell forward abruptly. The girl let out a soft but frightful cry as she was harshly shook from her slumber. "It's okay." He assured "Sorry...I just...something came out in front of me. It's okay. I'm okay." He assured, looking into the back seat at the disorientated little girl.
He sat forward in his seat, eyes out looking across the road behind his headlights. There was a thick darkness that he could barely see past. No one was in the road, he hadn't hit anyone but someone had definitely just narrowly missed being hit. Ethan contemplated what to do. What if it was a survivor? Surely an infected would have just ran right into the vehicle or worse...tried to attack.
Ethan sighed heavily. The only way he'd know was by going out there. He looked back at Ella and unclipped his seat belt "You stay here. Okay? look after Duke and don't come out unless I tell you to." He instructed the young blonde. Ethan lifted the steering wheel lock from behind his seat. Grappling it tightly, he opened the car door and stepped out into the night.
Everything was quiet, eerily quiet if you asked him. He pushed the card door shut. He didn't lock it, there was a chance that something could happen to him and if that were the case he wouldn't have wanted Ella stuck inside the vehicle with no means of escape. He'd stick close by, so nothing would get in, but if the chance arose...Ella could run if need be.
Gripping the wheel lock in his hand he stepped around the car, taking position at the front. Ethan gazed into the darkness and quietly called out "Hello?..." Ethan almost whispered. He could feel his stomach balling in knots as he anticipated a reply, but nothing came back. Ethan kept grip, taking another step forward "Is anyone there?" He called again, ready to strike if need be.
