She lay in her bed, hugging onto the pillow. These days she preferred to live in her dreams then in reality because to be honest..anything she dreamt could not have been worse than real life right now. Anna was startled by a loud thud. She snapped her eyes open and lifted her head from the pillow. Giving a glance around her sat up and pulled the sheets from over her. She had her clothes on still. She found herself the night before waiting for her father, waiting to see what happened. She was prepped and ready to leave at anytime..but nothing had happened and she had found herself falling asleep.
She turned to face the door and pulled her boots on. Walking across the hardwood she peered out of the door. No one was there. She walked down the hallway, trailing her hand across the wall as the noise got louder. She could hear frantic shouting now. Anna came to the boy’s room and tapped on the door alerting them. Simon peeped his head out, she bought a finger to her lips “Stay with Thomas..” she told him. She just wanted to make sure they were okay. The boy nodded and stepped back in the room, closing the door and she waited..she heard the key turn. He’d locked the door now.
Anna moved toward the stairs the yelling and crashing getting louder. She moved quietly down the stairs and slid her hand to the side of the case, grabbing the metal baseball bat from beside. That’s when she heard the blood curdling scream followed by a loud smash. Anna gripped the bat and darted into the kitchen where all the sounds were coming from. Upon entering she saw nothing, upon further inspection she saw..something. Peering around the counter top she saw her mother laying on the ground, her father leaning over her. There was blood everywhere. Anna gasped and gripped the bat tight.
Her dad snapped his head to face her. His eyes were lifeless, his skin pale and his face was splashed with blood. Her mother’s blood. Anna smashed the bat in his face knocking him backward and she ran. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her, screaming at the top of her lungs for the boys to stay in their room. Anna could hear the heavy footsteps behind her as her father chased after her now. She ran toward her room and slammed the door shut. Locking it she backed up hearing him coming. There was a bump and he hit the door, he began banging at it, rattling at the handle trying to get inside. Anna scuffled about the room, coming to her bedside table and ripped out a revolver.
Gripping it tightly she dropped to the floor, with her back against the wall and her knees into her stomach. She held the gun tight pointing it at the door. She waited, the banging stopped all of a sudden. Then the sound of feet patting could be heard, someone was running, running toward her door and bang! The door flew wide open. Anna didn’t even bother to look she just pulled the trigger. A loud bang to follow and she opened her eyes; her father was lying on the ground face down. Anna watched him silently, her hands trembling ever so. She began to pick herself up off the ground but stopped. Her dad groaned and slammed his hands on the ground beginning to get up. She got the gun ready and aimed it at his head. Closing her eyes she squeezed the trigger again. This time he didn’t get back up.
She had no time to react because suddenly her mother came running at her. Anna shot her too, straight between the eyes. Blood spattered all over her skin. Anna began to rub frantically at the blood, she knew that had something to do with the infection, she’d seen it. She rushed to the boy’s room banging on the door. She didn’t have time to explain they needed to leave now. She packed a bag and headed for the car. The streets were just as bad, people being chased cars turned over, people lying in the streets dismembered and disfigured.
They made a run toward the car and Thomas tripped. He landed with a thud against the ground, injuring his knee and elbow. She lifted him back onto his feet and darted toward the car. Once they were in the vehicle she wasted no time in putting her foot down. The boys were barely awake, which was a good thing in her case because the sight which met them was nothing to go by. She’d have much preferred them not seeing such a ghastly thing as this. People running in the street, others were dying on the sidewalks or at the hands of these infected people who worked in groups to advance on the weak. It was like something out of a nightmare. Anna let her eyes move all around her taking everything in. She heard a thud and jumped narrowing her eyes on the front windshield as she hit someone. The body smashed against the front window and dropped behind the back of the car to the road. Slamming on the brakes she turned and looked behind her. Simon jumped up in his seat looking out the back window at the man lying on the road. He took a breath “..Well, it wasn't a deer..” he stopped his eyes widening as the man got to his feet “...he's pissed..okay lets go, get a move on..go..go!” he yelled. The man snarled and ran back toward the car.
Anna frowned. She put the car into reverse and backed over the man hitting him once more, to finish him off she rolled the car forward crushing him underneath the wheels. He wasn’t getting up now. They were soon off again. Thomas was a bag of nerves, Simon just kept quiet. She looked up into the mirror and took a deep breath “We’re gonna get outta here..i promise you, I won’t let anything happen to you. We’re going to be fine..” she assured them both as best as she could. It was lucky the car still had gas to be honest, because in these conditions she’d have hated to have been walking. She kept her eyes on the road. They’d been driving for a half hour; time just seemed to fly by. They rolled into the centre of town to get some supplies for Thomas’s wound.
She parked up and turned to the boys, she nodded behind her toward the pharmacy across the street “Come on, let’s go get you cleaned up..” she smiled at Thomas. Simon got out and helped Thomas out. She checked the glove compartment in the car, score..her dad had left the ammo for the revolver inside. Anna reloaded the revolver before placing it under her belt, the remaining ammo sat in her jacket pocket. Exiting the vehicle she met the boys on the side walk and began to walk toward the pharmacy, she had the gun in hand; ready and aiming to hit whoever jumped out first. As Simon walked behind with Thomas he lifted up a tire iron that had been strewn across the ground.
Anna lead inside the pharmacy, her gun rose. She eyed the inside of the small store, all was clear. She nodded for the boys to come inside and quickly shut the door behind them. Locking the door she began to move slowly ahead toward the counter, her eyes travelled everywhere, making sure to stay alert. There was no one in the front of the shop. Anna placed the gun under her belt and lifted Thomas placing him atop of the counter. Simon stood beside him as Anna went to get supplies from around the shop, glancing at the boys every so often as a way of keeping her eyes peeled. She was all they had and she them. She couldn’t lose them.
She shortly returned to the boys with her supplies and got straight to fixing Simon up. First, she cleaned the wound, and then she applied a bandage to ensure that no infection occurred. Just as she’d finished wrapping the bandage she heard a noise. Her eyes narrowed onto the backroom behind the counter. She bought her finger to her lips silencing the boy “Stay close..” she whispered. Anna turned slowly and began to walk around the counter. She took a deep breath holding the gun tight she inched closer and closer to the door and then..BANG. The door crashed open. Anna pulled the trigger but hadn’t aimed and the bullet smashed into the wall behind the oncoming man. He knocked her down, she fell against the counter.
Simon rushed over and hit the man on the back with a tire iron, he snarled at Simon and shoved him flying. Anna managed to get to her feet and grabbed the gun. The man was advancing on Simon, trying to bite him “Hey fucker!” she screamed. The man turned to face her, his eyes vacant and his oozing mouth open wide “Eat this..” Anna said, pulling the trigger she shot him, the bullet hit him straight in the mouth and came out the back of his head. He hit the ground with a thud. Simon looked horrified. He had no colour left in his face, he just stared. Anna looked down at the man as he lay face down on the ground just in front of her. She sighed relieved and lent back against the counter, laying the gun beside her.
The man grabbed her left, Anna yelped and reached for the gun but knocked it off. She tried to climb on the counter as the man grappled her leg. Desperately she grabbed the first thing that could be used as a weapon..the cash register. Anna grabbed the register and dropped it on the man’s head. It wouldn’t have killed him but it made him let go. She grabbed the gun and climbed over the counter dropping down on the opposite side “Come on!” she called to the boys ushering them out of the store. They rushed back to their vehicle. They needed to get the hell outta here.
