James Hunter
It would have been just like any morning, only it wasn’t. What Jim would have done to be able to go back to sleep and wake up to something of the complete opposite to what he was witnessing right now. He’d have given anything. He’d woken up to the sound of smashing, coming from outside. James Hunter stood at his window, watching as the street below unfolded into chaos. His neighbours were already out in the street, caught up in the buzz of whatever was going on.
This was like a god damn warzone. Things were ablaze, people running for their lives, others bleeding out on the pavement. What the hell was happening right now? Jim turned his head; he looked over his shoulder at his wife as he heard her voice. She wanted to know what was going on. He had a great look of confusion on his face as he shook his head “I don’t know..” James confessed absolutely clueless right now. All he knew, was that his family right now were not safe here..they needed to leave.
James nodded at his own train of thought, he moved from the window and headed to the phone “Go and get Ella and Charlie, get dressed, and meet me downstairs..don’t go outside..” he added quickly as she instantly got up to do as he instructed. Suzie relied a lot on James, he was the type of man who always had a level head and knew exactly what to do during hard times. He was her rock. She hurried off to get the girls whilst he dialled the number for his sons apartment, as ever..no answer. He tried his cell and it went to voice mail. James cursed, the moment you actually want to talk to your kids..they were never around.
He tried to get a hold of his eldest daughter and would you believe no answer from her either. He wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d ignored her phone out of spite, she’d known how he felt about her staying out all night and not telling them where she was. God forbid if something had happened to her, they’d never know. Sure, she was 22 years of age but she was still living at home and whilst under his roof, she abided by his rules. He could have been unfair and given her a curfew..but he didn’t. All he asked was to be kept informed and she couldn’t even do that.
Either way, he couldn’t get a hold of either of his eldest children now and that concerned him. He quickly got dressed and hurried downstairs where his family were already waiting. His wife had turned on the news, and bulletins were spread out about the vicious attacks and an outbreak of infection..all the more reason to get out now he thought. There were reports of an evacuation, and that right away grabbed his interest. They were going to leave this forsaken place before anything awful could happen to either of them.
James however had other thoughts as for his own well being. He couldn’t leave his eldest children behind, what kind of father would he have been to do that? Grabbing his jacket he headed into the study room and rummaged about in the desk. He pulled out a small revolver. It would do for now. He slid it into the inside of his jacket and rejoined his family at the front door. He handed Suzie the car keys and she gave him a questionable look. He closed her hand around the keys and looked her dead in the eyes “You need to..” her face dropped, she stuttered and he cut her off “I’ll find you..we can’t leave without them, you know that..i can’t do it. Now I need to know you and the girls are safe..so go to the evacuation site and I promise you..i swear to you, I will be there..” he assured her.
She could always trust his word, even in a situation like this..he would always find a way. Really, she had no choice in the matter because when it came to it, staying here could endanger their other two children. It was down to her to protect them. James planted a kiss on her forehead. He turned to the girls and gave them a hug. He’d hope to see them again, he prayed they’d get there safety and he’d meet them on the other side.
He opened the front door and ushered them out, holding his gun now and keeping his guard. If anyone dared come near them he’d not hesitate to take them down. He watched as they rushed to the car, but Charlotte she ran back. She told him she couldn’t leave him. Ella was strapped in back now as Suzie stood near the car shouting at Charlotte to get inside. She pleaded with James and begged for him to let her stay with him, she was scared that something was going to happen to him. James really didn’t want to budge, if he was going to be trapped here or worse..killed..he’d rather know they were safe. Charlotte was persistent, a trait she got from James and eventually he keeled over. He sighed and gave in.
He turned to Suzie, assured her he’d keep Charlie safe and begged for her to leave. He watched as his wife and youngest child pulled off from the driveway and headed off. He turned to Charlotte “..You’ve always been trouble..” he muttered with a slight smile. James closed the front door and nodded for Charlotte to follow. He took the second car, his other pride and joy..his Cadillac Escalade.
They were off to Manhattan, where he’d search for his other two children. Then he’d rejoin his wife at the Central Park evacuation and they’d finally be free of this place.
