Tonight had begun like any other nightly shift that Jayden was on. She liked her job, aside from the unconventional and unsociable hours, but the pay was decent. In her life she had, had an array of occupations and this had the more...’formal’ kind. She’d been a cop for the most part, SWAT more specifically a sniper. But now she was working on security for a pharmaceutical company. It didn’t sound so thrilling but really it kinda was, you see having a multimillion dollar business like this it bought a lot of attention. They’d had attempted break-ins a whole bunch of times but, well...she made sure to do her job correctly. Jayden may not have looked very threatening but she really shouldn’t have been messed with. She was trained in CQC and Eskrima, meaning she was pretty much a master at kicking arse.
The night had begun fairly quiet, a few of the workers staying late and finishing up some jobs whilst she occupied the front desk of the building. Jay was seated, watching the monitors that showed the cameras from all angles of the facility. Her partner for the night hadn’t arrived yet, but she’d cleaned up the desk from the previous receptionist mess and set it up ready for the night shift. She logged into her screen name and filled in the timesheet for her previous shift along with setting the new checklist for this shift.
It was pretty boring by herself and with the others in their offices, keeping themselves to themselves, she often found herself waiting for something to happen. The phone rang, she lifted it to her ear answering...it was her colleague calling in sick. She rolled her eyes; shit this night was going to be so freaking boring. She didn’t give him much chance to come up with an excuse, but it was clear why he wasn’t coming in. It was Friday night, everyone was going out partying and he clearly thought his employers were too stupid to notice that. Well, she wasn’t stupid and she’d make sure he got punished for it on the next shift; he’d be doing all the checks by himself.
As she placed the phone down she heard a bang sound come from behind her. The brunette turned to look to her left, where the corridor went passed the desk and out of her sight. She raised a brow, she was certain someone had probably fallen over. Turning to the monitors she saw nothing but all the office doors closed. Furrowing her brows she settled back in her seat, only to hear the bang again but now it sounded more like a heavy foot kicking against one of the office doors. Sighing she picked herself up and walked around the desk, popping out on the right hand side before walking across the lobby to come toward the left corridor which led to the offices.
Jayde stood at the foot of the corridor looking down it. The banging got louder, she walked forward and the banging continued, louder and louder. It wasn’t coming from the offices; it was coming from the back stair well. She raised a brow and walked forward, slowly and cautiously. The hand began to twitch on the door before finally the banging and rattling stopped. She narrowed her eyes on the door, tilting her head as the corridor became silent. It was strangely quiet, the kind that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end as you anticipated a movement. Suddenly she heard something behind her, the brunette jumped startled by the sound only to be met by one of the office staff looking slightly confused.
“What was that?” he asked. Jayde shrugged “I have no idea, I was about to ask you the same question..” she stated an amused smile growing on her lips. He looked slightly confused and took a few steps forward trying to pick where the sound came from “Well...i’m the only one using the offices on this floor, I requested the ground floor...i’m holding a meeting, I didn’t want any disruptions” He explained. Jayde nodded understanding; she opened her mouth to speak but the banging started up again prompting them both to turn toward the door.
He led the way, she followed close behind. Now this was getting weird, she was certain that door wasn’t locked so why the hell wasn’t it able to just be opened? He grew impatient now, as his guests in the meeting room also came to the door to check out the scene. Jayde kind of averted her gaze from them, and continued to follow Curtis toward the door. She stopped, hearing the elevator ping just as the banging stopped. Jayde slowly turned her head, looking over her shoulder and narrowing her eyes on the elevator, the doors opened but no one stepped out. That was until one of the personal assistance literally fell out of the elevator. The blonde crashed to her knees, in floods of tears, looking worse for wares. Jayde’s eyes widened as she turned on her heel and began to walk quickly toward the blonde “Karen?” she called, the poor girl was sobbing, her suit jacket ripped and from what she could see stained with blood. She rushed to the woman’s aid and knelt down in front of her.
“Karen?” she called softly, her eyes wide with shock as she tried to get a response out of the woman who merely sobbed and clung onto her. She was talking fast, she couldn’t understand a word of what she was saying but she was absolutely hysterical right now. Jayde tried to reassure the woman, but as her eyes lifted into the elevator she stumbled across the reason why Karen was in such a state. Karen was PA to Kevin Richardson, who was now lying slumped against the elevator wall; it was safe to say that he was dead along with his business associates Mary Sommers and James Reed. Jayde stared for a moment, before urging Karen to get up. She didn’t want her to have to see this again.
Something was wrong, terribly wrong but right now she had no idea of what it was. All she knew was that above this level, something had erupted. She realised, narrowing her eyes on Curtis “Don’t open the door!” she yelled, but it was too late. Curtis had already opened the door to blackness. He stood in the doorway, his guests all now in the corridor and Jayde watching them as Karen remained stiff in her place. Silence fell upon them again; she could hear her heart beating in her chest, the only sound she could hear right now. She watched the door, waiting for what seemed like forever. Curtis grunted angrily and turned to face them “...There’s no one there..” he replied baffled. As soon as the words left his lips there was an almighty sound, like a snarling bear and in seconds Curtis was face down on the ground being attacked.
His guests all screamed as a man had seemingly leapt out of the darkness, grabbed Curtis and began biting into him. Screams filled the air, as the guests went rushing passed her, almost knocking her off her feet. Karen was already shaken up and sought refuge behind the desk, huddled underneath it. Everything happened so fast, no sooner was Curtis on the ground, his guests running toward her did more bodies pile out of the stairwell, some workers and others...she had no idea of who they were but they were pissed. With so many bodies, it was hard to see anything going on, she couldn’t see how Curtis was doing, and she could barely see him over the heads of those piling down the narrow corridor in a bid to get the fuck out.
Jayde shoved her way through the crowd, running the way in which they had come because Curtis needed her help. She couldn’t get to him, there were people everywhere, some running, some falling down and others already down and being stepped on. It was like a freaking stampede, she hadn’t realised that so many people were still in the building at this time of night. Jayde pushed her way through the crowd; heading passed the second elevator just as it came to the ground floor. The door opened and more people came. They didn’t care to stop, or try to avoid her and instead smashed right into her.
She fell against the wall between both elevators; hitting her elbow off the metal frame of the door with such force she heard the bone crack. Jayde yelped, gripping at her elbow as she was now slumped against the wall. She couldn’t hear anything but chaos screams and cries sounds that she could only describe as almost inhuman and the sight well that was much worse. It was now; now that she was sitting ‘out’ of the situation did she see what was going on. They were like monsters, eating each other and killing each other. It was like something from a really fucked up nightmare only this wasn’t fiction, it was real life and she was sitting here in the midst of it doing absolutely nothing.
The brunette launched herself to her feet and pushed back through the crowd despite her pain, she caught glimpse of Curtis who now had a whole group of whatever the fuck they were chewing down on him. They were eating him, actually eating his body. She heard Karen scream, eyes narrowed and she was gone. Jayde rushed across the lobby, shoving back those who were in her way and came up behind the fucker leaning over the desk, thrashing with his hands trying to get at Karen who could only hug at herself in a bid to shield from her attacked. Jayde picked up a chair and smashed it over the back of the perpetrators head. He fell sideways and hit the ground with a thud, only to roll over and attempt to get back up almost right away. She narrowed her eyes on him, his face, his eyes vacant and his face smeared in blood..it wasn’t until she really looked that she realised it was Billy the fucking copy boy.
Jayde climbed over the desk, just as Billy got up and he began after her trying to grab her legs and she slid down the opposite side. She opened the desk draw and pulled out a 9mm, locked and loaded. She wasn’t fucking around, whatever the hell was going on here, she wasn’t about to fall victim to it. It may have been too late for some of the others but not her and certainly not Karen. She looked at Karen and held the gun firmly in her grip “It’s okay, I’m gonna get us out of here okay? You just need to stay here.” She explained but Karen was completely out of it. Jayde made sure the safety was off and rolled out from under the desk, she jumped to her feet and pushed the trigger just in time to pop a bullet right between a lunging Billy’s eyeballs.
The sound of her gun firing, seemed to grab the attention of some of the other beastly fuckers, who turned and ran toward her, she fleeted her eyes toward Karen “Get behind me!” she yelled, Karen looked horrified but did as she was told. She crawled from under the desk and got behind Jayde as she began to shoot at some of the others who were pursuing the duo. She backed up, backing Karen down the corridor. She only had six bullets and it wasn’t long before she was out. More were coming and she was out of ammo “Keep going!” she yelled, spinning on her heel and running behind Karen. She could hear the stomping footsteps behind her as the two were chased down the long corridor.
More came from the stairwell and were running toward them, now they were being pursued from both sides and Karen stopped running turning to run back the way she’d come from only to find there were more on that side. She practically gave up and threw herself on the ground. Jayde urged her up but it was no use, she tried to drag her into the office but she wasn’t budging. She had her, right there, her hand and ready to lift her to her feet but then she was gone. Those things dived on her and it was the end, over in an instant. She couldn’t do anything but close that door behind her. Jayde yanked the door shut and locked it from the inside. She held the handle for a few moments as the pounding began against the door, one second too late and she’d been dead...or one second earlier and maybe Karen would still be alive.
Her eyes were wide with horror, her heart beating frantically. She finally let go of the door, taking quick breaths as she backed up away from the door. She was in the back security office, it was empty aside from all the monitors, a few chairs and the weapons cage where the firearms were kept in case of emergency. She pushed one of the filing cabinets by the door, shoving it over so that it blocked the doorway, just in case they managed to break the lock and then she sought refuge in the corner. She lifted the handgun off the table and held it close to her chest, knees up into her stomach and her eyes watching the door, waiting ready for those things to come inside.
The banging continued as they tried to barge there way into the room, but the sound of pounding did not block out the sounds of screams that came from outside. People were dying out there and there was nothing she could do, all she could do was hide in this room, all alone without a hope in hell of getting out of this shit. What had caused it? she had no fucking idea, but if she made it out of this room...she wouldn't rest until she figured it out.
