It had been quite the day at work; and it was far from over. Daniel and the rest of his co-workers had been at work analyzing salmonella and trying to find new and better ways to treat really severe cases of it. Daniel was not the most enthusiastic on that point. In his opinion it wasn't ground breaking enough. He wanted something more, something bigger. He heaved for it as a human heaves for the air it cannot have underwater.
"I'll be taking a snooze in the break room, tell me if anything important happens." Daniel said as he rolled half-way across the room on his backless office chair. He left the work room, his white lab-coat swaying as he walked. He walked out into the exit room which then lead to the decontamination room. Which he without further ado decontaminated himself and exited with clean clothes. It was one of the security protocols here, one which he found really annoying. If you wanted a break you had to go through that procedure because they had not been forward thinking enough and actually make a break-room inside the potentially contaminated area. But either way, a bath was always good for mental and physical relaxation.
Ten minutes later he laid sleeping on the couch in the break room. He slept heavily, and who could truly blame him. He had been working since early morning and up until now; now being 10:30 pm. He would get half an hour of sleep before he would return and let someone else take a break. Half an hour was perfect as an energizer. Luckily he would have tomorrow and the day after off, not that he wanted to. But they 'forcefully' had to give him the days off, something about overworking himself. Daniel didn't much care.
But something went wrong. The alarm on his cell-phone did not go off, and he therefore slept until early next morning. When he awoke he noticed an unusual lack of people. He would have assumed that somebody would have awoken him in case of an emergency. But they hadn't. He checked his cell-phone watch and headed out. He was still wearing the spare white lab-coat that he had changed into when he left for the break-room last night.
His eyes peered around as he saw the lack of people. This was unusual, even for today. He went down to the cafeteria to get something to eat. It seemed the workers there had only gotten their done half finished when they had had to leave rather quickly. He grabbed some bread, a pair of those small butter-boxes and something to put on the bread before making himself some breakfast. Since nobody was here, who was he to stay away from the goods?
His eyes sluggishly found their way to the TV in the cafeteria. Black screen, though he rather quickly found the remote control and switched over to the next functioning channel. His eyes widened as he saw the horrifying headlines. He quickly moved over to the window and looked down upon the streets. Even from the fifth floor it was quite easy to see that something was wrong with the people down there. He quickly ducked behind the nearest not transparent surface. As much as this provided an opportunity for himself, he would have much rather awoken to another boring day.
But this was far from normal, and he was on his own. He had to find answers, he had to find a way to get away from here, and from the area affected by this. He had to see if his kids were alright. "Just bloody great" He mumbled as he began on his journey to find answers, to stop this shit. But most of all, to find a way to keep his kids safe from this.
