borne back ceaselessly into the past."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby
The sound of sheer metal slicing through the air reverberated through Alpha's ears like the sounds of a drum being beaten relentlessly. The young man was sitting in a seat of a helicopter, eyes straight ahead and focused on the landscape below him. The entirety of New York City was smoldering. The city was burning… And Alpha didn't care. The young man hated New York anyway… It was better off this way to be honest. One more shit hole burnt off the map… Alpha and his team were being sent in though… He wasn't happy about having to set foot in New York City… But there were far worse things in life to be dealt with. The young man wasn't overly thrilled with the idea of what laid before him though. This wasn't a normal battle… This wasn't a regular war. Alpha was leading his team into the apocalypse. They were walking straight into hell and the young man couldn't do anything about it. Even if he could though… Alpha wouldn't have done anything… The young man was a good soldier and he obeyed his orders diligently.
Alpha and his team of soldiers, if that was what you could call them, were being sent into New York City, a quarantined zone. The young man was being sent into wipe everyone out. Not only was Alpha being sent into to kill and exterminate the infected citizens of New York City… Alpha was being sent into exterminate the living, uninfected survivors as well. Any other person might've blinked or thought twice about their orders… Any other person might've resisted or tried to think differently… But Alpha wasn't like that. Alpha didn't care. The only thing Alpha cared about was following his orders and accomplishing his mission. That was what please Alpha… The young soldier liked working and he was damn good at his job. Alpha and his team of soldiers were being sent into do something horrific… And the young man didn't even care in the slightest.
Once they had touched down, Alpha and the team had begun to make their way through New York City. Their instructions were to sweep the city, street by street and to exterminate every living creature that they had come across. Everyone amidst the team was a skilled and professional killer. It would've been no problem whatsoever, and the young man couldn't help but to feel as though they were going to be in for a surprise one day. This had been running pretty swimmingly until they'd been ambushed by a group of survivors. The black ops group didn't retreat… Far from it. They advanced and followed the group into the nearest warehouse, where Alpha was separated from the group. A piece of the beam from the ceiling had collapsed and fallen down, striking Alpha directly in the head, knocking him out cold. The rest of the team had tried to find Alpha and resuscitate him… But it was to no avail… Alpha appeared dead, even though he was just knocked out colder than an ice box. When Alpha woke up his team had moved on in an effort to carry on their mission… Leaving Alpha entirely alone to fend for himself… It would be no problem at all… Just another challenge for him to confront head on.
Alpha heaved a cross beam off his chest and grimaced through the pain. The young man ignored the searing pain that was ripping it's way through his body. Alpha was sure that he had a broken bone or something similar... The young man couldn't quite assess his body in his current condition. The young man wasn't entirely sure of what to do. Where had his team gone? Alpha wasn't entirely sure of that answer, but he was going to find out... The young man was on a mission that he was going to complete whether he had his team or not... That much was sure. With his effects in tatters, Alpha headed out of the ruined building and began to make his way towards supplies... The sun was rising and the young man was damn near sure that it was going to be one hell of a long day.[/blockquote]
