Vic was already breathing heavy. Him and Derek "Stinson' Collard had been moving through the backalleys and buildings for several hours now, and the wear from what they were seeing and doing was taking its toll.
They had to find a decent shelter soon, sit down and boil some water and eat and just chill for a while until they had rested and washed up.
Vic ticked off the time in his head. It had been two weeks since Red Platoon of the Dragoons, the best God-damn Cav Troop in the Army, had been choppered in to Seize and Hold the Staten Island Ferry for one last civilian evac run. They had no clue what they were going into, no clue what the Delta boys they were holding the Ferry station for were going to find inside, and no clue what was going to come for them when the staccato 'Pop' of rounds echoed through the neighboring buildings.
Two weeks since almost his whole platoon was wiped out by a bunch of JDAMs dropped on the Ferry while he and his LP/OP1 watched helplessly. Why the fuck hadn't they evac-ed them back out? That shit wasn't friendly fire, that was straight up treason as far as Vic was concerned.
As they reached the next corner, they saw it led one direction, shooting off to the right. Vic squated down next to the corner, and Stinson stacked up behind him, standing. They had done this so many times in the past few weeks it was ingrained in their muscle memory: Corner clear, sentry kill any shamblers with knives, and search for anything forageable. Too easy. At Vic's signal they both moved around the corner, Vic taking a knee and Stinson standing over him, weapons pointing down the alley.
‘Shiiiiit…’ Vic breathed as he dropped the grip on his rifle, the sling pulling it back into his chest, as he pulled a grenade from one of his chest rig pouches and popped off the safety clip and pulled the pin before rolling into it the MASSIVE FREAKING HORDE OF SHAMBLERS around the corner.
Stinson had echoed Vic’s sentiments and had already grabbed the backhandle on Vic’s Body Armor and was hurling Vic back around the corner when the grenade rolled into the crowd who had just started shifting in the soldiers’ direction. As Vic stumbled up from getting tossed around the corner he met Stinson’s wide eyed gaze with a belated ‘Frag out, RUN!!!’
*WHUMP*
It was time to go.

Lance Davis - Just Another Day - The Streets
He had lost a touch of normal concepts of time. Days had turned into weeks, weeks into months. All he knew now was where he was at and who he was with. Things seemed to have calmed which seemed strange when the world had fallen into hell. No one had tried to attack the compound in quite awhile, his female companion was still fantastic to look at, and his wound on his arm finally stopped hurting. The only downside to everything was that he couldn’t find his wife, his daughter. He hadn’t looked in a very long time. For the time being the most important thing was securing some where safe. Between him and Jayde they had been establishing that. Finding clues in what was the remains of Diamond Corp. Both searching for answers to questions that whoever was left in the world was wondering. Why had this happened? Together the two had seemed to dig deeper into the building hoping to find whatever they could to help them. At this point the main focus would be to stay alive, stay alive and hidden.
Lance was digging through some papers when he heard what sounded like a muffled explosion. He looked around Jayde was no where near him. He ran from the current office he was in and proceeded to the roof. Perhaps whatever it was could be seen from there. Opening the door he put his hand over his face to shield from the sun’s light. There was smoke coming from the distance.
Holy shit. It would draw every crawler for miles into the area.
He pulled the walkie from his belt that Jayde had given him.
"Jayde, do you read me? Over."
Nothing coming from the other end. Perhaps she was away from it…or perhaps she was actually out there in the thick of it. No, she wouldn’t have left without telling him…would she? Lance didn’t’ no her long but had gotten the impression that she would have told him had she left the building. But at the same time Jayde had her own plans…sometimes we all need to venture off. If this was Jayde she was going to need help…she would have only set off something like that if it was going to be bad.
Lance made his way down to the south exit that him and Jayde had established Cult .45 in hand he made his way secretly through the streets. If he was quick they could make it back to the compound before anything bad happened.

Damn shamblers, and he had dropped a grenade in the middle of them. A grenade?!?!
Turn around. Take aim.
*CRACK*
*CRACK*
Run.
Just the thing to agitate a bunch of them and get them in the streets. Brilliant fucking move, Vic, he thought to himself. Adrenaline had pushed him farther than Stinson, and he had come around the corner first. A fence! We might be able to shake them! He took aim while walking forward and-*CRACK* took out the lone shambler on the other side of the fence before starting to scale the fence.
“Stinson! Fence, climb it!” he yelled over his shoulder as he heard Stinson’s pounding footsteps come around the same alley corner.
As Vic landed on the other side of the chain link fence, he scanned down the alley, and turned to cover Stinson, satisfied their exit was secure. Stinson started up the fence as a single running shamble came around the corner, meeting a brisk end with a resounding *CRACK* from the 7.62mm round in the chest. When it spun and hit the ground, Vic blew its head into watermelon chunks with a second *CRACK*. They had already picked off most of the shamblers that could still run or walk fast after the grenade, but the slow mass of injured ones was sure to be coming in just a minute. They had to get around the corner and out of ear and eyeshot of those things so they could find a hidespot.
“Hurry up, man, we clear the fence, we might be able to get out without shooting up anything else and drawing even more towards us!”
Vic checked behind him again, and when he looked back, he saw Stinson get up to the top of the fence, and jump off, slightly askew. Vic saw the outcome, Stinson was falling at an angle and started flailing his arms, and Vic started moving to grab him, knowing already he was going to be too late. Stinson landed with a nasty Crunch and a yell of pain.
“AAAAAAUUUUUUUGH My FUCKING Leg Man!! SHIT SHIT SHIT”
Vic dropped his rifle and picked Stinson up on the left side, and threw Stinson’s left arm over his shoulder. “Come on man, we rough this shit out and find a spot to chill, and I’ll try and set it and splint it, but we’ve gotta GO!” They started moving, Stinson breathing in sharply as he bunny hopped on his good right leg along with Vic, who was supporting a lot of his weight. Vic had pulled the M9 and was holding it in his left hand, thanking God that at least he was able to support Stinson with his offhand and hold his pistol in his shooting hand in close any others came out or got close.
As they rounded the corner out of the alley and onto the roadfront, Vic almost stopped in place. There was a guy running towards them, not a shambler, they don’t hold pistols…..or a radio. And he was… wearing a suit? This guy….
“Corporal Halder, U.S. Army, you’re going the Wrong Direction, Guy!”
He hoped to heaven and hell that guy had something or someone good on the other end of that radio…

Lance Davis - Holy shitsnack people - Running for life
The sounds were growing louder, a good sign he was getting closer to the action. Well, maybe good wasn’t the best word to be using in this type of a situation. Lance moved silently through the alleyways avoiding any dark places and close cornered areas. So quiet through open streets, intersections, alleys, and drives This way if he was ambushed by them he could just try and make a quick dash rather then being cornered somewhere. It was also nice to stay towards entry ways leading to higher ground. If everything else failed he could take to higher ground and hope he could hold them off till he got help. Assuming he even did get help…Jayde was possibly out there. But he assumed it must be something serious to be making this much noise the woman knew better then to be throwing off explosions like no tomorrow and going through ammo like candy. If this was the case she was in trouble and Lance had to get to her. After all, she had saved his life, stitched up his arm, and made him relevant to the topic of the world going to hell.
The last part wasn’t the greatest of achievements. Lance was kind of oblivious to life in general, so even worse when the world goes to hell and the millions of people who had already thought of the Zombie Apocalypse are living comfortably on some beach some where. While Lance was running around with his foot up his ass. Honestly though, it was hard to believe anyone was living comfortably looking around the ruin streets. Corpses, decay, the smell, it was all just awful. How anyone could go on living a “normal” life was beyond him.
He had to be close now, the shots had to be coming from just around the corner. Taking a quick glance behind, Lance hurried to a run. As he rounded the corner he came upon two men…strike that, apparently they were Army.
“SHIT.”
Lance ran beside the other man who was limping giving him some leverage. Quickly the detective was able to put two and two together and realize that Jayde had not done any of this. Which meant she was probably still somewhere in Diamond Corp now wondering where the hell he went. This was good, perhaps he could get back up on the way there. If nothing else it was more hands to protect the area and ammo to use if needed.
“Corporal how many are behind you? Are there other survivors?”
Pleasantries could be saved for later the important thing now was getting the hell out of here. It would go a lot faster if the cripple had more help. Lance made sure the other army guy’s arm was draped over his shoulders before starting the some what face pasted move.
“I’m leading.”
