Miranda & Tiffany Levesque
March 28th - Afternoon
Retirement Home
Miranda strolled into work like it was any other day, her sister was already there because she has to be there to unlock everything and get things going. Some of the elderly woke up early but others would sleep in. They had a very diverse group of old people slowly making their way around the home. Miranda walked in, wearing her blue scrubs, and went to the front desk where her sister was typing on he computer. “I hope you’re not internet dating during work again.” She teased as she checked into her shift. Tiffany giggled a she looked up and her and shook her head silently for a moment. “Girl, you’re lucky you are my twin, or you would be seeing birds flying around your head by now.” Miranda gasped dramatically as she then proceeded on to start her shift. She stopped by all the rooms to see who was up and who might need help getting up.
She went entered a code to open a set of doors that were used for the old patients that needed to be monitored more than others because perhaps they were a danger to themselves or others. Mainly this is where all the Alzheimer’s patients were kept or the one’s that were losing it, thinking they were back in the war again, talking crazy. Her grandfather was also in this part of the retirement home and she would always go visit him while she did her rounds in the morning.
The door was wide open, and she walked over to the doorway and saw him sitting there, looking out of the window, deep in thought. His roommate was already off to get breakfast, she recalled passing him on her way by. It was good that the nurses escorted the special care elderly to the cafeteria room where they all ate. She leaned against the doorframe for a moment, watching him, seeing if she would notice her or remember her name. She finally walked and cleared her throat. “Everything going okay, gramps?” She said, and at first he didn’t say anything and continued to stare mindlessly. She walked over next to him and bent down. It was like he didn’t even notice she was there. “Gramps? It’s me, Miranda…” She said, touching him on the shoulder.
He finally looked over at her and smiled. She smiled back. “Are you feeling okay today?” She asked him, that sweet tone in her voice radiating through him. He nodded his head. “Yes, deary. I’m doing just fine. Just admiring the beautiful summer day.” He said as she looked back out the window. She looked over as well and smirked. “Gramps, it’s fall. Summer doesn’t start for a few months.” She said and he smiled again, shaking his head. She could tell that he knew he was wrong after he said it.
“Do you want me to help you to the cafeteria? I hear they’re serving your favorite.” She said, letting her vowels longer and he looked over at her with a grimace. She loved the look on his face when he was excited, it was the most adorable thing as far as old people expressions go. “Waffles?” He asked, and she grinned back at him, that happen to be one of her favorite meals. Waffles. She shook her head. “I wish, but no.. you’re close though. Come on, I’ll bring you over there.” She said as she helped him up with his cane in one hand and his other arm locked together with hers. She escorted him out of the room and down the hall until they got to the cafeteria room where all the elderly where sitting down to eat. She patted him on the back and he walked off and took a seat and ate himself some oatmeal.
She went down the hall to see who else might still be in bed or wondering around by herself. She went entered the code on the padlock and went back over through the living quarters and was passing the front desk when Tiffany noticed her and tried to get her attention. “Hey, Randa!” She called out to get her attention. Rand was her nickname back when they were kids.
Miranda glared over at her and walked towards her. She knew how much she hated being called that at work.
She went over to the front desk with a curious expression. “What can I do for you, Tiffy Iffy?” She called her a childhood nickname back and Tiffany just smirked. "Erm, Diana needs some help. Apparently Miss Cola won’t get out of bed and was coughing up blood. Ron never showed up today and neither did my right hand lady, Erica.” Miranda gave her a strange look and nodded her head. She knew it was unnatural for both Ron and Erica to be out of work. After all, Ron lived alone and Erica was devoted to her job. It was weird for them to both be out, especially since neither one called in or anything. As she headed for the other side of the retirement home where Miss Cola’s room was, she heard a screaming, “Ahhhhh!” Miranda stopped with her eyes wide for a second and then started to run.
When she got to the room she looked in to see that Miss Cola was biting one of the nurse’s arms, blooding was splattering out. Miranda panicked, she ran over and grabbed the nurse, kicking Miss Cola away and she fell to the floor. She helped the nurse, Jackie, to the floor as she leaned against the wall. “Are you okay!? Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.” Miranda said as she looked at the wound on her arm. It was just a bite after all. “Watch out!” Jackie yelled and Miranda looked over her shoulder and Miss Cola was coming for her again. Miranda back up and went over to a bed pan from near by and she hit her right over the head.
She bashed her head a few times until she was sure Miss Cola was not getting back up again. She dropped the pan and helped up Jackie, and they went to see that it was only getting worse. One of the fatter patients, Mister Tucker, looked just like Miss Cola. Both of them looked like they were dead or something. It was like something out of a zombie movie.
“Run!” Miranda yelled as the two girls started to run down the hall. Miranda’s main thought was getting to her sister before something bad happened to her. As they were running, suddenly one of the patients jumped out of their room, and right on top of Jackie. Miranda got knocked down and hit the wall and by the time she got back up to her feet she saw she was being bitten in the neck and then two more infected elderly jumped on her and started eating her, too. Miranda covered her mouth and looked up, a few more than came for her. She gasped and then turned around quickly and ran back to the front desk. “Tiffany, where the hell are you!?” She yelled once she saw she was not at the front desk. She looked down at the living quarters to see that there were a few dead infected on the ground, and there was Tiffany, she was pinned the wall with a pole in her hand that was stabbing one of the infected patients.
The pale was resting on the wall, stuck there, and the other part was stuck inside the infected patient, piercing it’s hearts. It was trying to get closer to Tiffany to bite her, but he couldn’t reach. “Miranda, over here!” She yelled, and of course her twin was already on her way. Before she knew it the infected was hit right in the head and went down. And there was Miranda, breathing heavily. “I guess we have to get them in the head.“ She said, looking down to see an axe in the infected’s head. They were never quite sure why there was an axe in case of emergencies, but they didn’t much care at the moment, for it saved their lives.
Tiffany leaped for Miranda and hugged her tightly. She then let go and she yanked the pole out of the infected elderly, one of them being their grandfather and Miranda took out the axe from his head. “Let’s get the fuck out of here.” Tiffany said, and they looked down the hall to see even more were on their way. “Good idea!” Miranda said and they ran right out the living area, past the front desk, and outside. Where were they going next? They had no idea. All they knew was, they were no longer safe.
