Personality-
Derek is the type of guy who breaths sarcasm. He doesn’t take much things seriously, often cracking jokes, snarky remarks, and or pointing out the obvious flaws people have done. What’s more, he enjoys doing it. Even someone were to get mad at him for his comments, he’d just laugh it off and throw another tease their way. His laid back personality actually makes him somewhat immune to other people’s harsh comments towards him. Rude comments, harsh names, and sarcastic jibes just roll off of him, and he’ll just throw them back at people.
Though it doesn’t look like it, Derek does actually have the stuff to back up his threats. He usually keeps himself in calm, laid back mood to have people underestimate him. This way, when he does actually start throwing punches, people would be taken back that they just had their butts handed to them by a pothead. Derek is also the type to rarely pick a fight. The only time he does get into a fight is when someone actually manages to piss him off, such as people who hurt or make fun of his brother.
As a child, Derek was a trouble maker. That still hasn’t changed. He’s still causing trouble with his various pranks and his mischief. Granted, he’s smarter than he lets on and now-a-days only uses his glossary of jokes to lighten to mood or to get people to think of something else.
Derek loves his family and is very, very protective about them. Even his own father, who was arrested, is in his list of people he cares for. And though Derek can be your best friend or just a easy person to be with, if you mess with his family, he will not be afraid to go ape-shit on you. He actually got suspended for beating up a kid who was about to hurt Mike. The same can be applied to those within his family. He’s actually grown to dislike and cut ties with family members for talking bad about his father and brother.
Derek may be laid back and nice, but he keeps secrets. Major ones. He acts tough because he doesn’t want people to see him being “weak” or “vulnerable”. In addition to that, he has a severe drug addiction problem. He often does drugs to help him with stress or to forget about the bad things that have happened. He’s tried to get help, but he doesn’t want anyone from his family to know, so after a long day, he’ll sneak out and either smoke pot or snort cocaine. However he’s been a year clean. If you don’t count the pot.

History-
Derek is the son of Michelle and Dana Lane (though they technically aren’t married). His mom was getting by as a waitress and his father…well let’s just say his father got into a lot of trouble. Call it hormones or just the excitement of being young and crazy, but Dana and Michelle dated and things quickly went from casual dating to friends with benefits to a pregnant teenager. Michelle gave birth to Derek James Lane at the age of seventeen. He was a handful then and he’s a handful now.
At the age of two, Derek was a grow bud of trouble. He liked to draw all over the place. He even drew in the back seat of his dad’s car. His parents often fought, but they seemed to collect themselves in front of Derek, not wanting to badly influence Derek. Granted it didn’t stop his dad from sneaking around. And then baby Mike came along. Derek was at a loss, stuck between being the good big brother and watching out for baby Mike and drawing on the baby’s face. To this day, Mike has never seen the picture Dana took of Derek drawing on baby Mike’s face.
However Derek didn’t get to do his brotherly duties, because Dana and Michelle didn’t stay together. They often fought when they were together and it was just inevitable that they split up. Derek ended up with Dana, but he did get to see Mike on the weekends. When he was four, he heard that something bad happened over at Michelle’s place. That was probably the first time he realized her truly cared about his baby brother. He kept asking his dad what happened to Mike, if his brother was okay and so-on. Fortunately Mike was okay, but his little brother ended up living with their grandparents.
For the next ten years, Derek grew up with his dad, becoming more and more like his father. At the age of ten, Derek got into his first fist fight. At the age of twelve, Derek had been caught shop lifting, twice. And the age of thirteen, Derek took up freerunning. However his first attempt failed and he ended up cutting himself after trying to jump a fence. To him, his life of laid back actions and free-to-do-as-he-pleases periods were the best times of his life. And then his dad got carted off to jail for being an assessor to a murder. Derek had the choice of foster care, or living with his grandparents. He decided to go with the lesser of two evils and went to live with his grandparents and his little brother.
Mike was probably the only good part of his new home. He spent the first week at his new home pulling pranks on his baby brother. However, he didn’t like his grandparents talking badly about his dad. Granted, Dana didn’t win the father of the year award, but to him, Dana was a great dad. Well, maybe in the top 50. Derek would often sneak out and stay out late, just freerunning with friends. Sometimes they’d steal a few things from junkyards or tagging street signs and defacing walls.
When he was sixteen, Derek got into drugs. A friend of his found a bag of weed when they were running and curiosity got the better of them. Since then, he’s been hooked. He was actually his little secret. Not even his little brother, the person he tells everything, knows about his drug problems. He’d snort coke when he was stressed out and smoke weed just to relax. He’s still doing drugs to this day and he still tries to do it when no one’s looking.
When Mike came into high school, Derek was somewhat weary. He secretly kept an eye out on his brother, following to make sure his brother got to classes ok. It turned out to be a good thing. Because when Mike came out about being gay, a homophobe tried to beat up his brother. Derek intervened and got suspended for beating the living shit out of the guy. That didn’t stop him from going to Mike’s swim meets and supporting his little brother until the day he graduated. By then he was sure Mike could take care of himself and impressed his family by getting accepted into NYU. Granted it had been on a Track scholarship rather than his actual grade, but hey, no one complaining that the family black sheep got into college instead of dropping out of high school like everyone predicted.
Of course college sucked and Derek found himself getting into more drugs. He knew he was starting to get an addiction and had actually sought counseling, knowing that if he got caught with drugs, his grandparents would find out and Mike would find out. Don’t ask him why, but seeing the disappointed look on Mike’s face would just be too much for him. His counselor understood and she, along with some of Derek’s new friends, helped him through his drug problems. He’s one year clean to this day.
And then the family reunion came along. That day things changed. Now, he loved horror movies. They were awesome and he often watched them after a stressful day, laughing at the sheer awful dialogue and cliché plot lines. However that day…that day was a horror movie he didn’t want to see ever again. He had watched as his own family members became zombies or were killed by zombies. In the chaos, he lost sight of his brother. If he hadn’t been for his years of freerunning and parkouring, Derek would have died that day. He zipped and jumped and weaved through the crowd. He picked up and axe on his way and met up with his cousins Oliver, Victoria, and Bennett. He had to admit they were quite the zombie slayers. As they were killing zombies, they ran into Mike and Anna and Derek could have cried with relief.
They escaped, but not all of them made it. Anna had died from a bite on her leg. But she didn’t stay that way. She attacked and killed Bennett and scratched Mike. Derek didn’t know what happened, but after seeing his little brother get attacked, he just lost it. He attacked Anna, killing her with the axe he recovered from the party. And it wasn’t long before Bennett rose from the dead. Derek just made sure his cousin stayed dead by chopping off his head.
The four remaining survivors moved out, finding refuge in the museum. Derek stayed close to Mike. He was genuinely scared for the first time. When he saw Mike get attacked, he had so many horrible imagines of his brother turning into a zombie. He wasn’t sure what he’d do if that happened. Though he isn’t the oldest, Derek feels like he should be watching out for what’s left of his family. He often stays up doing guard duty and fixing weapons. He actually surprised his family members with his extensive knowledge of guns and his actual near perfect aim.
Anything else?- (any other important information we should know?)
Sample RP-
Derek sighed. He felt itchy. An irritating ghost itch that wouldn’t leave him be. How long had it been since he took a hit? No, he couldn’t think about that now. He leaned against the wall, staring at the boarded up window of the museum. He could hear the demonic moans of the undead. The moans that oddly felt soothing. It must have been the lack of activity for the last few days. They had just been sitting in this museum, using it as a stronghold. And the silence and lack of activity was driving him fuck insane!
He wasn’t the type of person to just sit around and do nothing. He needed to run, to move, to get out there and take a long drag. Okay, he probably should avoid that last part, but he still needed to do something. Something to get his blood pumping. Something to get his adrenaline rushing. He stood up. It was late, around midnight and the others were sleeping. He stretched, cracking his neck as he stretched his joints. He’d go for a quick run around the exhibits. He’d be back before they knew it.
He took off, jogging past exhibits as he zipped through the museum. He ran up to the rails that went down to the first floor and he jumped, sliding down the rails on his butt. He hopped off the rail just before he touched down and took off. He bounced off a stone column and did a back flip, landing in a crouch. Doing another flip, Derek turned and ran up the stairs, propelling himself up with every two steps.
He slowed to was walk as he got closer to the “camp site”. He turned the corner, the adrenaline pumping and satisfying his need for movement. And then he froze. His eyes widened at the mess in front of him. There was blood everywhere. Oliver’s body laid torn and ripped next to Kayla’s broken, bleeding corpse. Mike’s blood stained shirt laid flat on the ground where the boy had been sleeping. Derek felt his heart clenching, his blood turning cold. This couldn’t be happening. They had been save. A-and he was only got for a few seconds. No, no one could have gotten in while he was gone.
“Derek…”
Derek turned, only to be attacked by a zombiefied Mike.
And that’s when Derek woke up with a start, his body covered in sweat, his heart racing, his breath ragged. He looked around, confused and scared. Mike was sleeping peacefully next to Ollie and Kayla was standing guard. Derek relaxed. It had all been a dream. They were safe. No zombie attacking tonight. Hopefully they won’t be attacking tomorrow either. Derek laid back down on the floor where he got comfortable for bed.
